The end of the year! 2016 has been…a mixed bag – Trump-ism, losing Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen et al, and the creeping malaise of a tired government. Green Party MP Mojo Mathers shares her year.
My highlights of 2016
Moving to Peel Forest in South Canterbury has been just incredible. We’ve had heavy frosts, snow, gale force nor’westers and magical misty mornings. Kererū and Korimako (bellbird) are both frequent visitors to our place.
Also this year, Kea – a rescue dog from the SPCA made her home with us. She is simply the smartest, sweetest dog ever!
Live captioning of Parliament TV has been a highlight not just for 2016, but of this term. Finally, I can follow the debates from my office! The standard is incredibly high and it’s made such a difference to my work. I’m so proud to have helped make this happen.
My lowlight of 2016
Having to say goodbye to my much-loved dog Pippa due to a massive tumour. Pippa was an earthquake refugee and incredibly loyal companion.
My holiday spot
I will be spending the holidays at home! With Peel Forest reserve and the Rangitata River at our doorstep, there are bush walks, waterfalls, white water rafting, horse trekking and more!
My summer reading
Our home has hundreds and hundreds of books, with overflowing bookshelves in every room – so I’m spoilt for choice! I’m currently reading The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton.
My Christmas wish for 2017
World peace and zero carbon emissions.
Failing that I’m looking forward to next year bringing baby goats, bees and chickens!
