On Tuesday evening I participated in the launch of the ‘Cooking 4 Change’ recipe book, which Metiria and I both contributed our favourite recipes to. Along with Dick Frizzell, Trelise Cooper, Tiki Taane, Erin Simpson, Jono & Ben, Colin Mathura-Jeffree, a couple of Warriors – and others – I served dinner to Auckland’s homeless at the Auckland City Mission.
Proceeds from the book will go to the City Mission as well as to Paw Justice, Starship and Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. The recipe book is beautifully produced, with a fantastic array of very tempting looking meals. Do pick up a copy!
While it was fun to have a brief chat to Urzila Carson about stand-up comedy, it was a real privilege to meet some of the people who are sleeping rough on Auckland’s streets and to hear their stories. There are some extraordinary people who are in dire straits right now – homelessness is a rapidly growing problem in New Zealand, but it’s also one we can do something about, if we muster the political will.
If you would like to share your stories or suggestions about tackling the homelessness crisis, we encourage you to come along to one of the public meetings we are holding across the country, or send in a submission. Find out more at http://www.homelessnessinquiry.co.nz/
