Cuts to Afforestation Scheme a bad signal - by Catherine Delahunty

The Afforestation Grants Scheme (AGS), which was first announced in 2007, was created to encourage carbon capture by small forests planted by farmers and other landowners whose entry into the Emissions Trading Scheme can not be guaranteed. Now it has been cut back just when we need more trees planted. Under this scheme the Government [...] read more

Celebrating the Green’s insulation success - by frog

Yesterday marked the first anniversary of the Heat Smart insulation programme. The Greens have campaigned for years on the economic, social and environmental benefits of such a programme, and recognise it as a key plank in any Green New Deal as it is addressing both the climate crisis and the economic crisis at the same time. read more

Could progressive electricity pricing cut inequality? - by frog

Metiria has just launched the Green Party’s Mind the Gap package, the third instalment of our Green New Deal and frankly, a better way to prioritise spending in this week’s budget. This year’s package focuses on tackling inequality. read more

Men and trees - by Catherine Delahunty

I spent yesterday at the Farm Forestry Association Conference in Invercargill and I can confidently report that what those people don’t know about eucalypts and acacias and redwoods is not worth knowing. I was there to promote the Green New Deal on forestry and to learn about the sector from a group of very experienced [...] read more

Green New Deal could have prevented record unemployment - by frog

Unemployment has hit a ten year high of 168,000, or 7.3 percent of the labour force, according to the December 2009 Household Labour Force Survey released today. This is far worse than the 6.8% or 6.9% that many commentators were forecasting. How different it could have been if the Government had been prepared to buy into the Green New Deal package proposed by the Greens. read more

Paula’s Christmas bash - by frog

As if it isn’t miserable enough being on a benefit at Christmas time, Paula Bennett has decided to put the boot into beneficiaries. Wouldn’t it be a better idea for the Government to actually create some jobs for beneficiaries through a programme like the Green New Deal? Or would that be too hard? read more

Fitch is sending New Zealand a message - by Jeanette Fitzsimons

It is hardly surprising Fitch has signalled a credit watch on account of our current account deficit. The Greens have been pointing out the seriousness of our overseas deficit for many years. There is not much compassion in international circles for people who have been living beyond their means for many years and expecting others [...] read more

Green MPs Support 350 Challenge - by frog

Green MPs support Bill McKibben’s campaign to reduce carbon in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, down from the current 389 ppm which is going up every year.  Scientists believe this would keep the global temperature rise to less than 2C. Meanwhile, the NACT government struggles with denial.  National’s “target” is a 50% reduction [...] read more

Dear Diary, should I Think Big or Forward? - by frog

My Kiwidiary today remembers this blast from the past: [On this day] Derek Quigley, at the Young Nationals Conference, speaks against the ‘Think Big’ programme, 1982. Muldoon announced Think Big in 1979, aiming to develop heavy industry. It carries the industrial era’s unsustainable style which wreaked eco-havoc, but also produced a legendary new skate park [...] read more

Two Reasons to Vote Green - by frog

Except for the funny accent and that fact that we’re not part of the EU, this could just as easily be a video to support our very own Green New Deal and Green Stimulus Package right here in New Zealand. If I were Irish, I know how I’d be voting this year! read more

Insulating the Budget - by frog

Well, it’s happened again. Budget stuff has leaked from Wellington, stealing the thunder of Greens and Tories alike ahead of tomorrow’s announcement. No one is immune, and all sorts of theories can develop about who may gain an advantage by leaking such stuff. First of all, after a thorough hop around the corridors of power, [...] read more

Waste Not West Coast Forests - by Catherine Delahunty

The commercial forests of the West Coast are currently presenting a dilemma to the Government. These ex-Timberlands forests are producing low-quality timber and in many places the soils and climate have proven unsuitable for the species planted. A fierce windstorm last winter smashed over whole forests in some areas. Given the damage and the cost [...] read more
