National’s Plan B: Strip-mine the poor - by frog
A printed copy of an email from Paula Bennett turned up at my lilypad very early this morning. Or was it just a nightmare? National’s Plan B – having failed in their objective to strip-mine the land: Strip-mine the poor. Bad for forcing down wage rates; bad for low-income employment churn, especially given the Fire at Will extension; bad for productivity; so ultimately bad for business too. Just plain dumb! read moreAugust 10, 2010 7:42 pm - 32 Comments -
Welfare Working Group off to inauspicious start - by frog
Presumably under pressure from ACT, the Government seems to be unable to resist finding places for wingnuts on the various advisory groups it is setting up. Yesterday it continued this trend by appointing Business Roundtable communications consultant and former ACT Party President Catherine Isaac (formerly Judd) to its Welfare Working Group. read moreApril 15, 2010 1:22 pm - 20 Comments -
Gutting ACC – compensation cuts for casual and seasonal employees - by frog
Reducing compensation for casual and seasonal workers is to penalise those most in need of state support through a period of injury and rehabilitation – especially since they are the least likely to have reserves of savings to make up the shortfall. It’s just not fair! read moreOctober 21, 2009 9:32 am - 1 Comment -
Using the Force? Make sure it’s legal - by frog
A bit of culture jamming is what you need to show that people are, in fact, paying attention. So it was when Scoop’s Gordon Campbell wrote up Kennedy Graham’s International Non-Aggression and Lawful Use of Force Bill, which was released last week. I’m not sure who to credit for the photo, beyond scoop, but if [...] read moreJuly 13, 2009 2:57 pm - 30 Comments -
Jeanette replies to Gordon Campbell - by Jeanette Fitzsimons
[Jeanette is writing in response to Gordon's recent article in the Wellingtonian] MMP is obviously rough on journalists who can’t conceive of anything other than a 2-party system. But the country has had MMP for 15 years now and it’s time to catch up. I can’t imagine anyone is under any illusion, after our fight [...] read moreMay 19, 2009 7:01 am - 21 Comments -
Dunne’s step to the right should be worrying centrist voters. - by frog
Gordon Campbell’s continuing series of interviews with party leaders continued yesterday with a fascinating analysis of “the Ken Barlow of New Zealand politics? Peter Dunne. The bit I found most interesting was his discussion on taxes. Note that Dunne is offering himself forward as “reality check? on an incoming National government to prevent it “har[ing] [...] read moreJune 17, 2008 8:36 am - 10 Comments -
Voting with your head or with your heart - by frog
Gordon Campbell’s interview of Russel on Scoop’s Election 08 yesterday is a fascinatingly read. Campbell, with his background in the Green Party’s parliamentary team, knew the tough questions to ask and seemed determined that his interview could not be perceived as a patsy, or lacking journalistic credibility. The first half of the interview deals with [...] read moreMay 14, 2008 12:34 pm - 9 Comments
