A couple of troubling questions on the Hobbit Bill - by frog
Who was telling the truth, John Key or Gerry Brownlee? Their stories differ. And how does this legislation clarify the law as to who are contractors and who are employees in the film industry, when it just seems to confuse an issue the Supreme Court had already made clear? read moreOctober 30, 2010 8:05 pm - 9 Comments -
Gerry Brownlee: The “employers’ representative” - by frog
If an employer’s representative made a statement like this one from Gerry Brownlee, it would be in serious breach of prohibition of duress under the Employment Relations Act. But Gerry thinks he can say it anyway. Unless he’s actually acting as the “employer’s representative”, which maybe he is. Perhaps we need an Official Information Act request abut his communications to and from Warner Bros and associated corporate interests to determine that. read moreOctober 23, 2010 7:04 am - 63 Comments -

A short lesson for Sir Peter on employment relations - by Keith Locke
I have no doubt that Sir Peter Jackson is a well-meaning person, with the interests of his workers at heart. But he does need a short lesson in how to relate to unions. So, Sir Peter, I would advise that: 1. You don’t attack the legitimacy of a union, as you have with Actors Equity. [...] read moreOctober 4, 2010 12:14 pm - 10 Comments -

Join the Fairness at Work rallies - by frog
On July 18 2010, John Key announced the National Government’s plan to drastically change employment law in New Zealand. If passed, the changes will take away workers’ rights, remove protections, cut pay, reduce holidays and diminish access to sick leave. The NZ Council of Trade Unions are kicking off the fightback against these attacks on workers’ rights with Fairness at Work rallies in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. read moreAugust 10, 2010 9:58 am - No Comments -
Take a break, Kate - by frog
The Minister of Labour needs to take a break. But instead, she blunders on with a rushed and poorly considered Bill to take away employees’ breaks. This is legislation at its worst – both in process and in substance. read moreOctober 28, 2009 3:49 pm - 4 Comments -
The workers’ rights debate - by frog
Yesterday’s CTU employment relations debate was reported as feisty, but it felt fairly tame compared to union election debates of yore. There were a couple of heckles, mostly just rude and abusive rather than the traditionally to be expected gruffly humorous or vaguely threatening. There were a plethora leaflets being handed out from the Greens, [...] read moreOctober 10, 2008 9:25 am - 57 Comments
