Mayoral backing for Auckland Harbour Bridge Walkway/Cycleway - by Keith Locke
It looks like there may be a breakthrough in the years long campaign for a bikeway/cycleway over the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Yesterday I attended the launch of the Pathway Working Group”s concept plan in the newly opened waterfront Wynyard Quarter. Auckland Mayor Len Brown spoke very positively about the plan, and it was supported by [...] read moreAugust 22, 2011 10:12 am - 2 Comments -
Using the road as if they owned it - by frog
The Herald describes a brutal cycle accident, ‘apparently caused when competitors in the Coromandel Peninsula K2 race were squeezed between an “impatient” ute and a milk tanker.’ Here’s one competitor’s account: Kenny Chia, a competitor, saw the accident and described the ute driver as impatient. “We could hear an angry horn coming from behind us [...] read moreNovember 2, 2008 8:33 am - 32 Comments -
Car Free Day – Wellington - by frog
This photo below shows the space fifty people in cars take, and the space taken by the same amount of people in a bus. It’s also supposed to show the space the same number of people on bicycles take up, but the cyclists seem to be mingling in sociably with pedestrians and and other gadabouts [...] read moreSeptember 22, 2008 12:21 pm - 19 Comments -
Rogues dash across the bridge - by frog
Heh heh. I like the occasional good bit of rogue political protest so long as it’s harmless. It keeps our democracy healthy. So good fun to hear that several dozen cyclists broke away from the Getacross Car Free Day gathering near the Auckland Harbour Bridge to make an ‘illegal dash over the southbound clip-on‘ to [...] read moreSeptember 22, 2008 10:49 am - 13 Comments -
Ralston huffily tells us how to live - by frog
Grumpy ol’ Bill Ralston is dispensing style advice from the Listener this week (full article on line in a couple of week’s time). Now I know that Ralston fancies himself as a Mercedes-driving satirist, skewering the occasional humourless environmentalist, but look at this grouchy list of dislikes. It seems to me that this week’s whine [...] read moreMay 20, 2008 2:17 pm - 16 Comments -
Shared transport space - by frog
Monday’s news coverage of Cyclist Josh Campbell’s youtube video of the dangers cyclists face out on the frontier streets of Christchurch has provoked debate about the perceived dangers cyclists face on our roads. I reckon that cyclists in other cities and towns could easily replicate that footage or provide more horror stories. Without wanting to [...] read moreMarch 12, 2008 9:51 am - 5 Comments -
North Shore bus way - by frog
North Shore’s new bus way got off to a mostly positive start this week (although the Herald’s highly scientific evidence was less than affirming). The Auckland Regional Council is predicting that the bus way will take over 2000 vehicles off the northern motorway during rush-hour. I feel kind of sorry for the North Shore cyclists [...] read moreFebruary 5, 2008 8:40 am - 27 Comments
