Too many reports, not enough action on the ETS - by frog

While the select committee struggles through the deluge of submissions on the ETS, the rest of us who are interested are forced to wade through the plethora of reports released this week in honour of our first serious attempt to tackle CO2 emissions. The report card? Not so good. The one thing that all the [...] read more

Pollan asks ‘why bother?’ - by frog

One of my current favourite political authors, Michael Pollan is on his way to New Zealand to promote his new book, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto. On Sunday he had an opinion piece in the New York Times where he asks that dark question that troubles many  environmentally aware people – why bother [...] read more

Up, up and away - by frog

I see the government says New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions for 2006 were 77.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2-e). And they are ‘less than’ 1% more than our 2005 emissions, which were 3% more than our 2004 emissions. We are gently sliding further away from our Kyoto target of 61.9 Mt CO2-e. [...] read more

Debating climate change - by frog

I’ve returned from across the road at Rutherford House where the ISCR was holding a public debate on ‘should New Zealand fight climate change‘. The two debaters were Victoria University’s Prof. Jonathon Boston and ISCR’s Research Principal, Richard Meade. Meade said for the purposes of the debate he would take as a given the IPCC [...] read more

EU carbon prices enjoy solid rise - by frog

That’s the title of an interesting article over at CarbonPositive. Prices are rising as news of a modest increase in the EU’s emissions in 2007, (just 1%), bump up against the declining cap on emissions for 2008.   The price of the most-traded carbon contract, for forward delivery of EUAs in December 2008, closed at [...] read more

Kerr is a contrarian, even with himself - by frog

In a gloriously hypocritical about-face, the Business Roundtable announced today that a carbon tax would be better for business and the environment. In today’s Orwellian press release; Saving the Planet Must Not Cost the Earth, Kerr paints the Australians as having spent considerably more time than we have in evaluating their version of the ETS [...] read more

Climate change pass-times - by frog

The Guardian has a spectacular series of photos on climate change and environmental destruction. This one below is a coal fired power station in Yorkshire, England The coal-fired power plant emits more CO2 – 22.8 million tonnes annually – than the 100 least-industrialised nations combined. Drax provides 7% of Britain’s electrical power. Burning fossil fuels [...] read more
