London freegans unfazed by rising food prices

You might want to check out the video in this website that tells the story of a London ‘Freegan‘ family who salvage food from supermarket dumpsters in a protest at the shocking amount of food discarded annually. Or you might not, depending on how interested you are in where your and other people’s food comes from.

Freeganism comes up every once in a while as quirky news story but the point freegans make about waste in our food system is an important one that we need to address.

    We had a couple of young American freegans staying with us last week - apparently there is quite a network of them in some US cities. The point they wish to make (apart from it costing them less to live) is that fully 50% of food in the US is thrown away - not given away or composted, and that this, in a world where people are still hungry, including in the US, is obscene.
