Could be messy

The story about plugging an extinct volcano in Auckland with human waste caught my interest. Could be messy I thought… but fortunately:

Auckland University vulcanologist Ian Smith said Aucklanders need not be concerned that they would be showered in “biosolids” in the event of an eruption. Formed 30,000 years ago, Puketutu Island is one of about 50 volcanoes on the active Auckland volcanic field.

The next eruption from within that field was likely to form a new volcano, rather than come from an existing one, Dr Smith said. “I think it is pretty safe.”

Is this really the best use of the biosolids?

they presumably have a lot of useful nutrients in them, so why not use those nutrients to grow something. I’d suggest a fibre crop like eucalyptus, hemp or flax, because people may be uncomfortable about eating food grown in human shit. Hemp may be best as you cut it down and replant every year, giving an ideal opportunity to spread the next load of biosolids on the field.
