Zimbabwe walks
Further to my post the other day, looks like half of my prediction is coming to pass.
The BBC reports:
Zimbabwe’s interim cricket board has suspended the country’s Test status for the remainder of 2006.
[snip]
Zimbabwe Cricket said it had decided to suspend playing in Tests “after considering recent performances”, but the nation will still play one-dayers.
One suspects that they won’t be back in 2007, unless Mugabe and Zanu PF are gone.

Frog:
Look I respect the sincerity and the effort the Greens have put into this issue, but as the news from Zimbabwe (at least what little escapes Mugabe’s censors) keeps getting worse, this is sounding more like a sideshow.

Craig, not so much a sideshow, more a minor symptom.
In no way am I suggesting that the cricket situation is more *important* than the huge crisis going on there, I’m just passing it cos its the sequel-of-sorts to the Black Caps stories last year, one which is not getting a lot of pick up in the media here.
FYI, Keith is keeping an eye on the situation, he hasn’t made any public pronouncements on it because we feel that the the independence of the cricket board really has nothing to do with whether NZ should have sporting contacts or not. It could be completely independent of Mugabe and it would still be a bad idea for our cricketers to play a team from there.
Judging by the relative lack of comments on these last two posts I’ve done on Zimbabwe, opposing Mugabe is evidently pretty uncontroversial round here.
