Greens set energy policy

Well, it’s nice to see seasoned political journo Richard Harman claiming the Government’s decision to stall Transpower’s terrible power pylon plan for the upper North Island was due to Green influence.

In today’s edition of Political Update, a newsletter put out by law firm Busby Ramshaw and Grice and believed to be written by Harman, states:

Take the recent decision by Trevor Mallard to stall the Waikato to Auckland pylon route … in the few interviews he has given on the matter, Mr Mallard has been vague as to what the Government is doing and why. The overwhelming impression is that energy policy is on hold till after the election when maybe the next Labour Government might have to deal with the formal support of the Greens.

This is an interesting interpretation, and one that I must admit hadn’t occurred to me before. But if Labour is indeed looking to create some space with the Greens on certain policy areas after the election, it’d be heartening if the vital portfolio of energy were among them.
