Realising Cantabrians could do with a moral boost the Dalai Lama altered his schedule and fitted in a talk in Christchurch before his Australian tour. The Canterbury Arena was packed for the event.
The only sour note was from the Chinese Embassy, which approached our government after they heard about the visit. Presumably, as they have in the past, they were discouraging any Ministerial meetings with the Dalai Lama.
In Canberra the Dalai Lama will be meeting Green Party leader Bob Brown and Opposition leader Tony Abbott, but the media today says a meeting with Julia Gilliard is “unlikely”. Is Chinese pressure behind this?

Maybe Julia is busy that day or doesn’t believe (much like myself) in isms, to quote Ferris Bueller “A person should not believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.”

Unquestionably: The Chinese loathe the Dalai Lama touring anywhere, particularly Australia – could be quite a telling reaction….given his disposition, the choice of who to support seems clear…past Prime Ministers have caved to their own public pressure and met with him – I guess the Chinese threw x billion dollars worth of trade on the table….I remember him drawing 58,000 people in Melbourne (the venue was no bigger).
