The Government is finally looking at implementing some of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment’s Recommendations on longfin eels. We have been pushing for protection for longfin eels for a long time and we now welcome some progress. There was good analysis in the PCE report which should be a basis for action given the limited commercial value of the fishery and the threatened status of longfin. Splitting longfin quota off the shortfin quota in the South Island so we know how many longfinned eels are being caught is an important first step, and it is great to see increases in escape tube size from fyke nets. While these steps are great we need to stop commercially fishing our endangered wildlife.
