Congratulations to Carl Scott for his unique protest at the way we currently treat hens. Carl has been cooped up in a cage for 31 days outside Mainland Poultry in Waikouaiti (just North of Dunedin). Today Carl has flown his self-imposed ungilded cage for hopefully a hot shower and a chance to stretch his legs
I visited Carl half-way through his protest and the weather was getting pretty cold. The cage was much less roomy than your average prison cell so to commit to spending 31 days in it shows how committed Carl has been to animal welfare issues.
While Carl has been raising awareness through his highly visible and well publicised protest I have been working on a Green Party submission to the Draft Code of Welfare for Layer Hens.
The reason I was able to visit Carl was because I was given the chance to look around a new breed of factory where chicken’s live in colony cages. These are bigger than battery cages but are really just another cruel form of farming eggs.
Our submission will put this point strongly.

I’m glad you’re shedding some new light on this subject. We can produce food for our tables without making the short lives of the animals we eat just totally miserable.
