Submit on NZTA’s application to change the Regional Freshwater Plan for Wellington

by frog

Even though our freshwater ecosystems are in crisis and two-thirds of all New Zealand native freshwater fish are threatened or at risk, the Government is trying to use the Environmental Protection Agency to remove protection from endangered New Zealand fish habitat so that we can build a motorway on it.

It sounds crazy, but it’s true!  As part of building the Transmission Gully motorway, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has applied to the Environmental Protection Agency to change the Regional Freshwater Plan for the Wellington.  NZTA wants to change the Freshwater Plan to weaken the protection currently afforded to the Horokiri, Ration and Pauatahanui Streams because they believe that they will have trouble getting resource consent to build the motorway if the current protection on these streams stays in place.

The EPA has established a Board of Inquiry to hear the application, and is receiving submissions until Friday March 11, 2011.

If you love our streams, help protect them by having your say.  Please view our submission guide then make a submission!
