    Don’t be so self-deprecating, Idiot/Savant - by frog

Idiot/Savant from NoRightTurn blogged today in response to his nomination for Amnesty International’s  Aotearoa NZ’s Human Rights Defender Award saying: While I’m flattered, its clear from the list that I do not belong on it. The other nominees are doing real work which changes the world for the better. All I do is mouth off on [...] read more

No time to take in the view on Waterview - by David Clendon

Things are not looking good for the Environmental Protection Authority. We supported the bill that will properly create the agency but with considerable reservations, and already it is clear that community groups wanting to participate in EPA processes are being hamstrung by the impossibly short time frames allowed to submitters. Here’s a bit of a [...] read more

A new Green baby - by Gareth Hughes

Amidst the tragedy of the last few weeks I have been blessed by the miracle of new life. Two weeks ago, my wife Meghan gave birth at home to a gorgeous baby girl, Zoe Elizabeth. She’s my second (and last!) child and I’m stoked that she’s happy and healthy, as is mum. Like the Chinese [...] read more

NZ Youth Delegation: Our best reps at Cancun - by frog

I’ve been meaning to blog on the Cop16 UN Climate Change Conference that kicked off in Cancun yesterday, but there hasn’t been much news forthcoming other than the traffic jams that kept delegates and foreign dignitaries trapped in buses for hours yesterday. Luckily, New Zealand has some very inspiring and intelligent representatives in Cancun as [...] read more

Horizontal becomes vertical in climate change debate - by frog

This is amusing. National Party blogmeister David Farrar called out Labour MP Charles Chauvel for this Red Alert post, in which Chauvel says: “My aunts’ home in Tahiti, 6m from the high tide line, is no less likely to be washed away by rising sea levels than it was last year.” The problem for Farrar is that Chauvel was obviously talking about 6m horizontally, not vertically! read more

Welfare Working Group: Submit, submit, submit - by Catherine Delahunty

It’s great to see the lively discussion continuing on my post last week about the future directions of welfare policy. There is a view being circulated by some that the Government’s Welfare Working Group’s Options Paper doesn’t deserve much attention; that it follows the Brash 2025 Taskforce formula of misrepresenting the issue as some massive [...] read more

“The Morning Star” of West Papua - by Catherine Delahunty

Today, December 1 is the day that people from all over the world show solidarity with West Papua. The much loved and contested symbol of West Papuan rights is the flag “The Morning Star” which will be flown in many places today. Keith Locke was at the flag raising in Auckland, while Russel Norman represented us [...] read more

How will/should Auckland grow? - by David Clendon

The question of how Auckland should grow is one that you can expect to hear an increasing amount about over the next year as the Auckland Council develops their spatial plan. The government has already made their position pretty clear – both through the release of their new document “Building Competitive Cities” and through Steven Joyce’s [...] read more
