A reminder in the MSM today as to how lucky we are. Lucky to be able to engage in a battle of ideas without fear.
Iranian-Canadian Hossein Derakhshan, nicknamed “the Blogfather” and credited with starting a blogging revolution in Iran, has been sentenced to more than 19 years in prison….for co-operating with hostile countries, spreading propaganda and insulting religious figures.
We are a privileged few.

Religion is one the biggest problems this world faces in my opinion. How many people have died in the name of religion and how many more will die ?.
I say ban it and make it illegal to openly worship any god.

I’m wondering if the anti-religious persecutor here (MR2guy) may be nilats’ alter ego.
Personally, as an atheist, I have little time for religion.
But I have less time for those atheists who are intolerant of religion.
That said, I have even less time for those who claim their religious beliefs as an excuse for homophobic, misogynist and racist persecution of others.

MR2guy, how many more people have died in the name of ideology? We saw fifty million die because of Fascism; we easily saw a hundred million, if not more, die because of Communism. Most of the wars of the 20th Century were fought over ideology, and undoubtedly many more wars in the 21st Century will be fought over ideology.
If we were to take your suggestion to its logical conclusion, then we must ban ideology as well because it creates war and death.

The green movement locally and internationally is infested with ideological dipshits. The scientific community has its share of dipshits but, unlike the green movement, it has the peer review process with which to counter them. Truth is decided not by consensus but by the evidence and the quality of the arguments; unfortunately for those claiming climate change to be false, all the evidence is in support of climate change and so to is the risk management.

I can’t stand this “if your not with us your against us” bollocks from the AGW crowd, they are responsible for far more environmental damage as they make it so much harder to pitch a responsible approach to the environment to reasonable people.

Against other legitimate environmental pursuits, and I agree, though that’s not where the main damage will be.

And deniers are worse yet. If you can decide to ignore the overwhelming evidence for AGW, what argument have you against someone else that does the same for your pet environmental concern? You’ve no credibility.
