There have now been two damning reports on G4s running of prisons and detention centres in the last couple of weeks.
G4S is a multinational private prison corporation that is in the bidding to run Mt Eden– Auckland Central remand prison.
This week - the British Chief Inspector of Prisons found that the G4S run Gatwick deportation centre has serious bullying, violence and drug problems (pdf).
Last week the Chief Inspector criticised G4S running of Wolds prison for spiralling drug use, stretched security and over-crowding.
One of the other companies that is in the front running for Auckland remand prison is Kalyx which was the subject of a damning report on how it ran the Harmondsworth Detention Centre and it was fined £5 million pounds.
There have also been ongoing concerns with the high levels of violence and drug abuse at HM Addiewell prison, which Kalyx currently runs.
The Minister of Corrections is bringing private prisons to New Zealand and her silence on these reports is deafening. How many damning reports will be enough?
Do we really want to bring private prisons to New Zealand?

Pity for those that have been incarcerated under such policies, and pity the opportunity cost.
But when we have a system that puts turkeys in charge, how could we not expect to get guano as a major product?

And with the huge quantity of guano being produced currently we won’t really need to mine lignite so that it can be converted into urea, there is only so much fertilizer that one can use!

Yes the building of new prisons tells me racism is alive and well. This comes from the colonial belief that if you bash and hit someone with a stick long enough and hard enought they will conform, and in case they dont, there is enough prisons to put them in! Unbelieveable!
