The US Department of Defense is playing it’s part in helping clean up the planet by only buying bullets that are eco-friendly.
The so called green bullets use no lead and are composed of a tungsten and tin alloy.
Not only are they ‘greener’, but the bullets also travel faster, are more accurate and are cheaper! Talk about more bang for your buck.
A defense analyst said,
“People will laugh if we say it is an ethical bullet, but lead pollution is an issue, particularly for soldiers on ranges, as heavy metal particles remain in the air.”
He is right, air pollution is a big problem. I think one way we could solve this air pollution crisis in war zones would be to stop firing small, high-speed, metallic projectiles through the air. This seems like a more practicable alternative.
While I do admit that in some cases—such as the eradication of possums, rabbits and other introduced pests from our bush—these bullets are a good thing, but it is complete and utter greenwash from the DoD to say they are more ethical and better for the environment.
One also has to ask when the DoD will find an ethical alternative to depleted uranium shells they carpeted Iraq with.
In fact why not just invest in an ethical alternative to bullets?

How are those firearm charges that Keith’s friends are being charged with getting on?
What sort of weapons were they?

[frog: You are on thin ice again here, jh. You know full well that the Urewera "terror" raids have nothing to do with the topic of this post. Put it on the General Debate thread, if you must put it anywhere.]

You stop a tungsten bullet and now we know you’ve gotten fast pollution ..can’t be sure whether to add one of these
or the 100%

I’m not laughing at all. War is a giant mess of toxic crap, especially just at a chemical level. Unfortunately the reactive chemicals you need to make things go bang are also pretty reactive when they contact animals.
I wonder how they compare to copper plated steel? That’s what I used to use when I was shooting noxious pests, on the basis that a little bit of copper and some rust was better than hunks of lead. You do lose range and I suspect that’s why the military has gone for the expensive option.

Sorry Frog but when I here about how anti war the Greens are I can’t help thinking of those statements in the affidavit and how the Green party whitewashed the whole affair. If your anti war you can’t be selective.

If this is indeed true, then kodus to the US government. At least they have exerted this little effort for the environment.

The colour of nuclear Oliver?
That’d be black, with an overlay of ash white, wouldn’t it?
(Neither of which, pedants like myself, are colours, I know!)

Here’s another rundown of the new ammo at accurateshooter.com:
http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2010/06/u-s-army-issues-new-m855a1-ammo-to-troops-in-afghanistan/
So basically better hard target performance, longer range and higher lethality than previous types. Range has been a problem in the Afghan theater with current weapon systems, and whether or not 5.56 offers sufficient lethality has always been a bone of contention; many saying the various militaries should have stuck with 7.62.
