This morning I joined the Friends of Tibet protest outside the Chinese Embassy on the 51st anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan people’s uprising against Chinese rule. Of course there was another ‘uprising’ in March 2008, with demonstrations throughout Tibet. Unfortunately, those who took part are still being punished with imprisonment, and one Tibetan farmer, Pema Yeshi, was given a two-year suspended death sentence last November.

Nice to see the flags out again, Keith!
This is one piece of politics that has been running longer than I have, which gives me a certain fondness for the efforts to keep the people of Tibet (or as the Chinese would have it, the Tibetan Autonomous Zone, although I haven’t noted any definable autonomy there ….) in the world’s eye. Namaste to all the supporters and the exiles.

If Tibet was free under the Dalai Lama or has not even been invaded it would be the equivalent of Bhutan and Nepal- Backwards nations with authoritarian govts that have only begun to change in the last 10 years
Nepal moving to an authoritarian Maoist govt and Bhutan only having Democracy because of the King and his Father’s Insistence
Maybe it would be better to protest for better inclusion of Tibet within Chinese affairs rather than giving the govt of China a reason to suppress the population, I don’t think the people may want to be free even the Dalai Lama has said that. What they want from what at least I can gather is the equivalent of Ireland from 1922-1936(49) with China having nominal control but generally leaving the people to their own devices like in HK and Macau or even the Taiwan Authority Province
sigh… anyway see you tommorrow Mr Locke MP- Go Cantab & the Queen
