Drug law reform: It’s not that simple, Simon - by frog
The Greens support the harm minimisation approach to our drug laws proposed by the Law Commission. But Justice Minister Simon Power’s response to the Commission’s report on drug policy and legislation is to back the hypocrisy and stupidity of the current drug laws. read moreFebruary 12, 2010 12:48 pm - 38 Comments -

Why just youth, Kate? - by frog
Roger Douglas and Kate Wilkinson speculated in Parliament yesterday on the reintroduction of youth rates. Following their reasoning, there would also be a discriminatory lower rate of minimum wage for Māori, and for New Zealanders of Pacific, Middle Eastern, Latin American and African ethnicity. There’s a term for that, and it’s not a nice one. read moreFebruary 11, 2010 3:11 pm - 68 Comments -
John Key takes a swipe at the Tertiary sector - by David Clendon
The Prime Minister took a swipe at the “increasingly urgent problems in our tertiary education sector” in his statement this week. According to John Key, “there are a large number of tertiary programmes, particularly below degree-level, that have drop-out rates as high as 50 percent, and … some of these programmes fail to properly equip [...] read moreFebruary 11, 2010 1:30 pm - 4 Comments -
Stop National stealing the Waitakeres - by David Clendon
I put out a press release yesterday highlighting a well-hidden clause in the third Auckland Council Bill which aims to nationalize Waitakere Regional Park. On Page 163 of the Bill is a clause which would repeal Section 77(1) of the Local Government Act. This means that the Waitakeres would no longer belong to Auckland Regional [...] read moreFebruary 11, 2010 12:24 pm - 6 Comments -

Kiwirail is considering closing the Stratford to Okahukura Rail Line because of damage to the tracks after a derailment last year. Kiwirail has told the media they are asking for submissions from the public before making a decision. New Conservation Minister off to a bad start with DOC review - by Kevin Hague
The Press this morning carried the news that new Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson has ordered a review into the advocacy role of her department. The story is not online for some reason, so I’ve reproduced the first few paragraphs below: Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson has ordered an investigation into her department’s advocacy role – a [...] read moreFebruary 9, 2010 2:38 pm - 60 Comments -
A map of global risks and their connections - by frog
Some economists have come up with a map of global risks. The size of the circle is the likelihood of the risk, while the thickness of the connection indicates the degree to which the risk relates to others. The thickness of the border indicates the cost of the risk. The colours are categories. Most of [...] read moreFebruary 9, 2010 12:28 pm - 16 Comments -

Waitangi Day 2010 - by Catherine Delahunty
The Greens had a stall this year and we flew the Green, Confederation of Chiefs and the tino rangatiratanga flags.
