No more Snoopy’s Christmas. No more Cliff Richard. How cool is this!
The power of the internet has given Rage Against the Machine the No. 1 UK Christmas single, with “Killing in the Name”.
Hat tip: lprent at The Standard.

I actually agree with pretty much everything they said, totally understand why these guys are @ no 1, most contemporary music has the substance of candy floss.

Yow, that’s a classic. Followed your links, frog, and learned RATM played at last year’s Republican national convention. How’d I miss that? Must have been a hoot!

RATM didn’t exactly play at the GOP convention Valis.

Played “at” in the same sense as a gun is aimed “at” the convention

The campaign has raised more than £83,000 for homeless charity SHELTER and has cost the gambling industry over £1 million.
Plus it prevented the usual tacky pap from topping the Christmas charts.
A good Yuletide effort all round.

I don’t think the bookies will be losing much sleep. With this year’s upset, there will be more interest in picking next year’s winner, and the bookies will recoop much if not all of their losses and probably more as a result.
Trevor.

The only bit I could make out was “killing in the name of” & “f u I won’t do what you tell me”. How about writing it down and committing it to an argument map…. and pleaaaase turn the bass down.

Yes, sloppy reading late at night. Same city seems to be the closest they got.

“F**k you, I’ll do exactly what you tell me”, yell the kidz, seemingly unaware of the irony. Meanwhile, Sony execs laughing their heads off as they make bank.
RATM: cool grooves, but the lyrics are purile teen nonsense , no better than x-factor(y) popsters.

Here’s how it should be done:

“They take away our freedom
In the name of liberty
Why don’t they all just clear off
Why won’t they let us be
They make us feel indebted
For saving us from hell
And then they put us through it
It’s time the bastards fell”

Exciting to read that this was a RECORD Christmas trading period, according to the New Zealand Retailers Association. Eftpos transactions hit a record 131 transactions a second on Christmas Eve as we wallowed in the feelings of comfort that spending brings (all is well, all is as it was), drenched at the same time in the music of the season (all is well, all is as it was), Snoopy doopy, chingle, changle, come sleigh me!

The Grinch – a carefully manufactured, subtley embedded foil to anyone wanting to break free from the commercialization of Christmas?
Try convincing your family that their overwhelming desire to buy and give gifts might be the result of manipulation by the commercial world.
You’ll get ‘Grinch’ in a milli-second. There are even hats and t-shirts that you can buy to give to the grinches who try to staunch the flow of purchase, pack and present.

I remember when Killing in the Name was first released. The record company told them that WalMart et al wouldn’t stock the record with those lyrics and they needed to provide an alternative version….
So the band did!
Corporate rock, eh.
“F**k you I won’t do you told me (unless we’re talking about Sears, because they’re a major retailer, dude)”

Umm, yes, finally got around to watching this – very good!
RATM is a usual playlist item when Peace Action Wellington march around the embassies for the Anniversay of the Invasion of Iraq, 20th March each year, which will prolly continue until all the coalition troops have left Iraq. Then we’ll prolly pick a day to demand their removal from Afghanistan…
