Enviroschools reprieve is not relief

by Catherine Delahunty

The Government has agreed to fund Enviroschools for another six months and then review it.

The review will use up precious resources needed to maintain and develop the programme. Thus the continued uncertainty and search for a secure funding base continues for Enviroschools staff. The Education for Sustainability Advisers programme has had no relief and now must rely on local government for their survival.

In the last six months there has been hard lobbying for Enviroschools, but from the comments in the House yesterday, the Government thinks this is just a concession to the Maori Party, not an affirmation of this fantastic educational programme.

The Green Party has deep concern that the current Government has failed to engage with the benefits of the Enviroschools learning model which enhances literacy and numeracy along with many other core skills.

When a Government chooses to cut or review solid and successful programmes you have to ask what the real problem is here? Is this National Government so worried about scrapping any programmes they didn’t instigate that they would overlook a great programme that helps children learn how to address the environmental challenges on our one and only planet?
