Firstly, even if AGW is totally wrong, increasing CO2 levels due to burning fossil fuels is causing ocean acidifaction, putting all the world's ocean fisheries at risk. Secondly, the ETS is primarily a method to meet our Kyoto oblogations. Unless we renege on Kyoto totally, we will have to either reduce our CO2 emissions or pay up. If we had a decent ETS and the government supported other CO2 reduction measures, then we could make a good profit selling genuine carbon credits. They don't need to believe in AGW at all, providing enough other governments continue to support Kyoto. And of course, many of the measures that would reduce our CO2 emissions would also reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and put us in a better position to cope with peak oil, peak coal, etc. Trevor.
