Our Green MPs will today be busy at Parliament talking about two Green member’s Bills.
Russel will be championing the Climate Change (Government Vehicle Procurement) Bill which aims to see the Government taking the lead on driving a more fuel efficient and therefore cheaper vehicle fleet. Who could vote against that sort of smart thinking!?
Also up for some parliamentary discussion is Catherine Delahunty’s Sustainable Forestry Amendment Bill.

Catherine and furry pal take the sustainable timber show out on the road
This Bill aims to help out our furry friends in the jungles of Borneo and the people who live in them by preventing the trade in unsustainable tropical timber. Catherine has been out and about championing this Bill for some months now. Like Russel’s Bill this seems like a no-brainer to support but I guess we will have to wait till tomorrow to see how the numbers fall. If you have access to parliamentary telly or have a transistor radio why not tune in and see/hear democracy in action.

Things not looking good for Russel’s Government Vehicle Procurement Bill either. Russel spoke really well, but the dinner break came during the next speech from Chris Auchinvole, who indicated that Government would oppose this one too. I was intrigued to hear Chris say that having fuel efficiency standards for the Government fleet wouldn’t work on the West Coast where he and I both live, because of the difficulty of the terrain. Comes as a surprise to me: my 1500cc Corolla hasn’t yet encountered a road on the Coast it couldn’t handle. And what’s more the Bill already provides for vehicles needing to be fit for purpose.
Seems like not that great a day for rational debate. Let’s remember that the Government’s shameful actions in voting these bills down at first reading prevents any possibility of public say or scrutiny by select committee.

With regards to the sustainable vehicle bill, why didn’t he just keep it simple by coercing the govt to only have 2 options (that exclude petrol)?????
For example: Electric Vehicles or vehicles that run 100% on hemp!!!
You can’t get much more cost effective & sustainable than that!

These people are ars*s. Don’t play soft-soap with them. It’s hard ball all the way and please, don’t be lulled by periods when they don’t actively attack you. They are playing a different game altogether.

Kevin – could you post links to the Hansard transcripts when they become available for those of us less familiar with the parliamentary web sites?
Cheers,
Trevor.

Hopefully two new Green Bills drawn from the ballot tomorrow.
Didn’t have time to listen to the debate on Catherine’s Customs Amendment Bill on timber imports, so just relying on Kevin’s comment that the Nats’ opposition to it was “the three worst speeches you are ever likely to see in your life” for now.
But am looking forward to seeing the content of those speeches – probably all bullshit about administrative costs for Customs, compliance costs for importers, and “free” trade agreement implications, I suspect.
Meanwhile, we sit back and watch indigenous forest and habitats of endangered species being destroyed so we can have some cool furniture in our backyards.

So, how did these Natty people justify supporting the importation of products obtained illegally in Indonesia?
Surely if they recognise the legitimacy of the Indonesian government, they should not support the undermining of its laws in that way?

Maybe National have former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (a NEW WORLD ORDER or ONE WORLD GOVT proponent) or others of the same ilk as their advisor(s)? Consider this statement:
“The illegal we do immediately. The unconstitutional takes a little longer”. Dr. Henry Kissinger New York Times, Oct. 28, 1973
If what I’m reading here is all true? Then they’re supporting actions that undermine the Indonesian Govt! But why would they do something so dumb?
