It isn’t good enough to line a birdcage. Not enough coverage.

I thought we did well here in Southland, to build a huge castle on the beach, but look at that photo of the crowd in Egypt – they all-but-completed a full-scale pyramid!
Nick won’t give a toss. He’ll be consumed by gloat, following his successful fooling of the motorcyclists. He’ll return to his fooling of the environmentalists later.

TV3 managed a spot on the news but failed to convey the huge numbers of people involved. I’ve done some looking but it appears that TVNZ missed the day of action completely, as did the NZ Herald (a worthless rag at the best of times).
So I’m puzzled – what does it take to get noticed..? How did they miss thousands of people all over the country being involved in this, let alone the vast numbers all around the globe..? Or did they..? Is there something else going on in these newsrooms..?

So…. it takes more than building sandcastles on the beach to get the media’s attention eh?

On the morning I sent an e-mail to Kim Hill’s show, pointed it out and they did cover it in the news later on.
I am mindful that it is possible that this aspect was simply a result of extreme laziness in the news gathering efforts here in NZ. That they needed to be told about it. Doesn’t make the news media any BETTER, but it isn’t necessarily intentional, it may merely be incompetence.
If we could figure out a way to export THAT we’d be wealthy beyond our wildest dreams.

Was this a common occurence elsewhere?
We were very well armed (sharpened spades galore), but I wonder what else compelled them to keep such a close eye on us?
Perhaps they support the cause?

Thank you Frog. My new Thesis on the “Decline and Fall of the National Reich” will contain much groundswell evidence such as this.
I am reminded of Dun Mihaka’s speech from the film “Patu” – ‘In the end, it is the People who decide!”
Good …eh?

Here’s the vid clip from Southland’s Oreti Beach, waves and all! That’s our tent getting a wash and that’s me! (Track panted leg on right, holding spade load of sand, face conveniently hidden

My impression of 350 (in Auckland at least)is they actually seem to be more interested in getting people together and making them feel that they have done something worthwhile in getting media coverage.
For example, this weekend during a 350 event I was approached by a reporter from one of our major radio stations. When I tried to direct them to a 350 organizer for a radio interview they (the organizer) basically brushed me off and told me they had more important things to do.
While it obviously isn’t going to get them great coverage I find this attitude quite refreshing – too often I go to events at the other end of the scale where the whole focus is on getting media coverage and the people who participate are hardly thanked for their time…

There was an amazing vibe on the waterfront by the time I made it to the Wellington event. Batucada were performing, there were tired-looking people whose stalls had been inundated (including downtown eco-therapy running out of plants for people to pot up and take away …), and so many people were just really enjoying the day – performers, punters, activists, the lot.
George, this stuff is good for (dare I say it?) our souls – this was a festival of us, as much as a demonstration to the rest of the community – and the positive feedback form so many in-sync groups and idividuals was very affirming.
Ok, so we all know that the Dompost is a festering cesspit of right-wing bigots; the only media response I saw from them was a few photo’s in the ‘society’ pages on Tuesday, showing the nice ladies of ‘frocks on bikes’, along with an anonymous male rider in the usual cycling gear.
There’s a lot of pix on the FB Event page that 350.org setup, here:

which come from 350 fans all over the globe.
