Gerry “Sexy Lignite” Brownlee assured Metiria Turei in the House yesterday that the govt would not mine in National Parks. Immediately afterward he took a patsy question that allowed him to expound on the merits of “responsible mining”. So let’s start this general debate with an informal poll:
Which Gerry do you believe?

Turei should learn to ask decent questions! She asked the same politically loaded alarmist question four times prior to this incident and got the same response. I imagine Gerry was sick of the alarmist rantings of Turei and thought she should learn to listen to the previous answers.
Standing orders need to be changed to ensure that members answer questions, but surely the standard of questions needs to be lifted at the same time!
Both Turei and Brownlee made a mockery of question time yesterday.

rubbish luke..!
turei had him on the run..
one feature of brownlee is his bombast/front-footing..
yesterday he was like a recalcitrant/sulking/foot-dragging student..
..in front of the headmaster..
(i found it quite ‘gripping’ telly..actually..
and indicitive of the power the greens actually have..
and now really is the time to flex that power..eh..?
the mad-times are upon us..
and it is time for the green party to loudly proclaim to all..
..that it is time to ‘cut the crap’..)

Read the Hansard Phil. Turei asked the same question five times before this happened. Turei just wasted the time of the House and the “green” Party supplementary questions.
Here is the link to the Hansard for you http://www.parliament.nz/en-NZ/PB/Business/QOA/0/4/e/49HansQ_20090916_00000001-1-Mining-Minerals-Stocktake-in-Conservation.htm
And my own thoughts on the whole matter here… http://lukewebster.wordpress.com/2009/09/17/brownlee-vs-turei/

Phil, I suggest you take your green tinted glasses off then and have a read of it. I was listening to it live too, reading the Hansard helps see things that you miss watching live.

You say “…Brownlee assured Metiria Turei in the House yesterday that the govt would not mine in National Parks.”
Where and when? The only clear comment I can find is:
“The Government has not said that we are going to mine in national parks.”
Saying “we haven’t said we will” isn’t the same as “we won’t”. There’s also a mixing up of the term “conservation estate” with “National Parks” the two are different things. Besides which, if an area of land has its status changed (for example, is changed from ‘National Park’ to some other designation – reserve, forest park or whatever) then the mining is no longer taking place in a National Park.
Brownlee seems to be saying “we will not mine in areas of high conservation value, but I’m not going to say what I consider to be of high conservation value”. He might mean “not Mitre Peak and Milford Sound, but everywhere else is fine”.
As for parliamentary question time – the whole thing is a joke, both questions and answers. Nobody is required to answer questions and all involved use the time for point scoring and other pettiness. If company directors answered shareholder questions the way politicians do they’d be sacked. If school kids answered questions this way in class they’d be getting detentions for being cheeky. Why this sort of behaviour by well-paid MPs who should have some concept of professionalism is tolerated is beyond me.

I have to say, I didn’t think her question was very good. It could have been a lot lot snappier and clearer, and as a result delivered more punch. Sorry Meyt.

Whanganui 1, Laws 0.
But it’s only half-time. Let’s hope Maurice Williamson, who makes the final decision, considers the evidence rather than side with the nasty little bigoted creep stirring up racist populism.

For some reason this is a knife in the heart for many people. I don’t get it, but I’m not from Wanganui so it’s no big deal for me.
I would go with Whanganui, but only because it’s the correct spelling, I don’t pay much notice to what Michael Laws thinks of it.

Touchingly US American. There is a great parody of this in a South Park Ep. Why does the beauty of a democracy seem to be in it’s participants hypocrisy?
Maybe your right. Is it inherently human?

I think he meant the Green party Toad. Happy to be passing laws to control what the populace do (what to eat, how to discipline, etc.,) but totally in favour of breaking laws that they don’t agree with. Come the revolution eh comrade!

Lukey-Pukey – perhaps if you didn’t censor out comments you disagree with you wouldn’t have to wander the internet trolling for visitors to your blog.
Kicked in any more public hospital emergency department windows lately? Police interviewed you yet?

I seriously doubt he did, Dave S. Those engageing in civil disobedience know the law, know the potential consequences, and are prepared to accept them.
The Greenpeace protesters don’t disagree with the laws they (allegedly, at this stage) broke.
They disagree with the felling of rain forest to produce palm oil and palm kernel products. They are prepared to sacrifice their own liberty to make that point.
Ever heard of Gandhi or Mandela, Dave S? Justice will eventually prevail, because good people are prepared to put themselves on the line in its interests.

I think you’ve read him correctly Sam. His answers to Metiria’s further questions today make it clear that his “stocktake” will be undertaken in all of the areas in Schedule 4, INCLUDING National Parks, and nothing is ruled out. As we have pointed out, the whole point of a stocktake is to count what you have to sell or, in this case, mine.

BLiP, you seem to have some weird fascination with me…
I do not moderate comments I do not agree with on my blog, even your comment is allowed and has been let through. First time commentators go into auto-moderation as that is the default setting that WordPress is on for my account.
No, haven’t had the need to. I am sure you would have waited outside whilst your 6 month old relative was potentially dying… grow up mate.

Toad, I would call it 1-1 given the referendum and what John Key said on Law’s show the other week… though having said that, I have come to expect Key to not keep his word on a fair amount of matters!
