I should also note I am not sure about the legal protection; that remains hear-say since I can not find any NZ legislation regulating the usage of the word. That said, as the research into synthetic diamonds continues and the price falls, the stated effect will likley happen and such legislation may well be introduced.

Was reading one of my psychology texts and the raw diamonds on the front made a idea come to mind.
The name ‘Diamond’ is legaly protected in many countries, including NZ, to distinguish the naturally occuring, and imperfect, ‘Diamond’ from the identical except human made, and potentially without imperfection, ‘Cubic Zerconica’. This artificially inflates the price of ‘Diamonds’ compared to the dirt-cheap human-made variation and thus provides motivation for a vast volume of human rights violations through to the present.
If we were to remove this legal protection or require only that the human-made version carry a designation ‘artificial’, ‘man-made’, ‘CZ’ after the ‘Diamond’ then the value of natural diamonds would drop dramatically and thus the motivation for many human rights violations. Of course this would of been far more effective when the violations were far more numerous.

Just a thought, and on human rights for a change .
