There’s a National Hui on setting New Zealand’s 2020 Emissions Target at Westpac Stadium in Wellington today. Will Maori argue for the 40% reduction Greenpeace is campaigning for, the measly 15% reduction floated recently by John Key, or at least the 25% reduction scientists say is the minimum needed to avoid the worst effects of climate change?

I’ll guess that forestry and coastal issues will be talked about alot. There’s potential for great gain from the former and great threat to the latter.

this is for the/any vegans in the green party..
(i think it’s called a ‘call-out’..or something..)

“..Living a vegan lifestyle isn’t something you should have to keep to yourself.
While the decision to respond to animal exploitation by objecting to any and all products requiring the use of animals is a personal one..
.. no significant change for the status of animals will ever occur ..
..if nurturing vegans are not there to help their peers to make this choice..”

Bringing this back over from the other thread. Because the recovery is so – delicate and it looks like plans that the recession can end with a bang.

“Look!” says Gordon Campbell, “The Emperor has no clothes!”
Can we now expect the Act Party to cease beating up on the welfare system and the alleged culture of dependence – given that just like Sir Roger, people on benefits are merely accessing their due entitlements under the law? Perhaps when and if Sir Roger can forego his own culture of dependence on the taxpayer for his travel subsidies, we can start to take his political philosophy more seriously. Libertarianism starts at home – or in this case, at the airport.
On the pig’s back, that man along with Sir Double Dipton and his cronies (poor dears!)

Looks like Wayne Mapp’s out-dipped Sir Double Dipton, greenfly:
So Mapp collects two accommodation allowances – one for the apartment he owns and one for the larger apartment he rents out.

well this is where those in the center differ from those on the left:
where people in the middle differ from those on the left is that while we abhor the sort of attitudes of Roger Douglas we aren’t blind to perverse incentives in the welfare system.

another difference is that we don’t hold up NoRightTurn as a bastion of objectivity.

I must be a centrist then! I surely abhor ‘Snouter Douglas’.
But then again, I do like to read I/S. He may not be a bastion, but he’s pretty sharp!

Greenfly, sometimes you can make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
Though most of the time it just looks like a hideous pig skin purse!!

Was reading one of my psychology texts and the raw diamonds on the front made a idea come to mind.
The name ‘Diamond’ is legaly protected in many countries, including NZ, to distinguish the naturally occuring, and imperfect, ‘Diamond’ from the identical except human made, and potentially without imperfection, ‘Cubic Zerconica’. This artificially inflates the price of ‘Diamonds’ compared to the dirt-cheap human-made variation and thus provides motivation for a vast volume of human rights violations through to the present.
If we were to remove this legal protection or require only that the human-made version carry a designation ‘artificial’, ‘man-made’, ‘CZ’ after the ‘Diamond’ then the value of natural diamonds would drop dramatically and thus the motivation for many human rights violations. Of course this would of been far more effective when the violations were far more numerous.
Just a thought, and on human rights for a change

* ‘synthetic diamonds’ not ‘cubic zirconia’ sorry, momentary cognitive failure*
Cubic zirconia is a diamond *simulant*, lol.

I should also note I am not sure about the legal protection; that remains hear-say since I can not find any NZ legislation regulating the usage of the word. That said, as the research into synthetic diamonds continues and the price falls, the stated effect will likley happen and such legislation may well be introduced.

Mark,
would not that be inducing an approximation of the conditions in our country as we were trying to prevent them in another?
