In our second video on Enviroschools we have the Prime Minister himself singing the praises and importance of Enviroschools. He says, amongst other things:
Most of all, we know that the environment is something that New Zealanders have for a long time taken for granted. We’re at a point we can no longer afford to do that, it is certainly very important for the future of our country.
As ‘Computing for Sustainability’ notes, he talks about the important question of how to get New Zealanders to engage in the issue. He highlights the role of the Enviroschools youth leaders:
a lot of New Zealanders see it (sustainability) as something the government can work on but don’t see it as something they can personally make a real difference to. You can play a leadership role in getting that message out there to the community.

This man is an ass. However, Enviroschools philisophy emphasises sustainability and resiliance and now is the time to see whether it truely designed itself to be that way. Reliance on government funding is not sustainable. Enviroschools should rebound stronger, if it’s kaupapa is tika.

Any other time I would be confident that Enviroschools would scrape together the funding from somewhere. Even if we had to have Vodafone Enviroschools TM – and no mention of the negative effects of the IT industry on the environment anywhere in the curriculum – I think that would be better than losing this programme altogether.
But, heading into the deepest recession, possibly depression, in 70 years is not a good time to be looking for corporate or local government funding. So I’m anxious…

Oops a wee bit out dated i would think.
Social engineering of children is not going to do anything about the millions of tons of Bunker oil being spewed into the atmosphere.
The damage done by airlines world wide.
The constant use of herbicides & pesticides used on lawns & sports greens.
The contaminants in our food.
Lets get real & do something about the real problems right here & now.
Not tomorrow’s pie in the sky that we may not survive for.

I’ve got another idea – let’s do both. We certainly need to deal with the here and now, but it’s all a bit pointless if we don’t change our culture to support that ongoing effort. Do you want the next generation to make the same mistakes we have been making?

“Social engineering of children”
Well Kelpie are you advocating we leave the ‘social engineering’ to the advertisers and the vested interests that control the media?
