On thin ice: Documenting earth’s disappearing glaciers

This past week the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) of the US ran this documentary, showing the vast destruction of human habitat that is coming in just a few short years due to global warming. No doubt the deniers who love to hang about frogblog will point out how helpless we are and how doing our bit won’t make a difference. I’m sure they will all be singing a different tune when 100 million or more refugees flee the great river basins on both sides of the Himalyas in the next twenty years because the glaciers are gone and the rivers are running dry…

  1. Since the climate is constantly changing, often very significantly (the Little Ice Age and the Medieval Warm Period, for example), it should be obvious to all that evidence of climate change is not evidence for anthropogenic influence.

Deniers of natural variation, you mean?

  2. A documentary showing the vast destruction of human habitat that is coming in just a few short years due to global warming.

Now we have models that are accurate to just a few short years! Interesting. How many months are in a “short year” 10? 100? 1,000? 10,000? Interesting.

  3. I saw on BBC this morning an interesting snippet on the sun’s not obeying it’s usual 22year solar flare cycle. Last year was supposed to be the solar minimum, but activity has continued to decline since and has got the sun scientists enthralled and confused.

  4. It doesn’t matter I just watched a crap documentary on the history channel saying that according to the Mayan the earth will end on
21-dec-2012. Now i’m watching another documentary that says yellowstone lake is going to blow and destroy the planet, as you can see by all these documentary’s their is no need for us to worry about global warming.

  6. So that some docos are wrong in predicting bad things means all predictions of bad things are wrong. If that’s the logic you’re using I can see why you have issues.

  7. I think the biggest failure of governments and the media to do with global warming is not mentioning that most if not all children born this millennium will have a very difficult life. I would say most parents just don’t realize how bad the future will be and what kind of life their children will have. In all the documentaries I’ve seen about global warming nobody has said anything about children suffering because of global warming.

Wat – we are way passed the medieval warm period! You remember the 3000 yr old man who emerged from the glaciers in the Alps a couple of years back? – the glacier had receded so that was 3000 year old ice he came from – there is a scientist who has been studying the largest glacier in the tropical regions for the past 35 years speaking on National Radio a month or so back – the age of the ice is steadily decreasing in the glacier and we are now getting ice that is 5000 years old – ie it is warmer now than it has been for 5000 years. He predicts that the glacier will disappear this century – but you know better of course.

  9. Peter – you really are paranoid!

I would say most parents just don’t realize how bad the future will be and what kind of life their children will have.

Have a look at the life of children in the slums of Mumbai or the Vanni of Sri Lanka (both in today’s news) and tell me how bad our childrens’ lives will be! They won’t be able to afford a flat-screen TV in every room, but they will have food, shelter, furniture, education, health-care and many things that millions of today’s children do not have access to at all.

The ‘consumer’ life-style will retreat, and perhaps a little bit of ‘community’ life-style will reappear. I don’t see that as bad!

How many threads have you posted your 5:15 on?
    I’ve already answered it elsewhere!

I have yet to see a doco that predicts ANYTHING right with regard to weather. Can you point me to one? (Note the weather forecast for tomorrow, which based on simple odds can be right 50% of the time by sheer chance, does not qualify as a documentary)

  11. I’m not too cavalier about the Mayan calendar being irrelevant; they had a second perfect system of timekeeping that modern man has only reached in recent times.
A calendar that is purely accurate over 5,000 years only to end in 2012.
Could be one o’ them dark stars on a collision course?
The Human Condition is to ‘know everything’ until different proof arrives – an unrealistic attitude that has managed to stick around for all ages.
Saw a Great doco on National Geographic where an ice-survey team returned to the same spot in the Arctic they had been the year before. Ice from horizon to horizon one year, and water the next – kinda convincing no matter what I’d Like to think.

  13. Astronomers are reporting heating of the other planets in the solar system so Sun activity is a likely cause, we should be using our resources on adapting to climate change rather than just trying to stop it.
