Green Co-Leader Russel Norman and I have just returned from the funeral of Geoff Park. Geoff was an author, outdoorsman, ecologist and a thinker – one who wove the various strands of New Zealand’s ecological history in illustrative and beautiful ways through his publications and conversations. He had a connection to the natural world I could only aspire to.
Talking to two Green Party staff members who knew Geoff, I discovered that his writings were their inspiration to work to protect the environment. One said:
Geoff’s writings directly inspired me to get passionate about conservation…along with causing a lot of grief over how much beauty we’ve lost. In fact, I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for him.
The Green Party pays tribute to Geoff. We commit to continuing the work he was passionately pursued.
At the funeral, an Edward Abby quote was read – one that Geoff loved and lived by:
It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here.
Deep peace Geoff.

That is so sad. Nga Uruora is the most inspirational book I have ever read. It fundamentally changed my thinking about the way we interact with the environment. I always imagined meeting Geoff Park in some random bush remnant and am gutted that won’t happen.
He leaves an amazing legacy
Deepest sympathies to friends and family.

The loss we’ve seen over the past 20 years through development of wild places here has been lamented in many areas.
I’ll have to add that to my booklist for my next library trip, while I sit at home & surf the exploits of the Save Happy Valley crew, who are also inspired by this pov on ecological history.
Another mighty kauri has fallen.

Nga uruora certainly brought home to me the incredible destruction we bring about because of our insatiable lust for animal flesh. The entire Hauraki Plains and Horowhenua was once lowland Kahikatea forest and is now a polluted mass of monoculture for producing dead cows.
