Further to my post yesterday about the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, there is this lovely music video from Amnesty International:
It is a cogent reminder that when we remain silent in the face of arcane legislation like the current Immigration Bill or last year’s Terrorism Amendment Act, we allow those who would take our rights to chip away at them quietly. We also allow illegal detention and torture to flourish in the forgotten corners of our world.

what? can you buy silence?
with all these boyracers and girlracers around, I would like to be able to buy a bit of silence.

I am looking forward to seeing the Green Party campaign against North Korea, where they still gas whole families to death because one member goes against the system

North Korea is an interesting one – how do you campaign against the practices of a country which doesn’t have an international image to worry about (only has embassies in Lebanon, Switzerland, Ukraine, China and Nepal), and is always looking for an excuse to shut its borders?
I look forward to it too, but not as much as I look forward to other parties simply giving a damn.

kahikatea, The previous government’s attempts to silent boyracers and girlracers violated several the basic principals of United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, specificly the right to trial before punishment, the right to compensation if the judicial system is found to have been in error, and the right not to be deprived of life. The latter is the direct consequence of funds for road safety policing being diverted to adress a public nuisance problem, especially in Canterbury where all of the additional funding provided under the Road Safety 2010 Strategy has been diverted to fund noisy exhaust blitzes.

Amnesty has also produced another video to commemorate the 60th anniversary. The 90 second video features a series of clips of people doing ordinary things at home. Each clip then cuts to show TV footage of a situation where human rights abuses are taking place. In each case the member of the public is then digitally inserted into the TV footage to make it look like they were personally responsible for stopping the abuse.

frog: slightly off topic but would it be possible for you to turn off the auto-play of the video on the George Monbiot thread? I would also like to know how to stop IE from automatically downloading and playing videos such as that one.
The problem is that the file is so BIG. It just hogs my internet bandwidth even when I am just looking at frogblog’s front page.
Thanks,
Trevor.
