Dr Indecision

by frog

I am utterly dismayed after reading a quote from Dr Wayne Mapp in today’s Dom Post, with regards to the NZ response to Japanese whaling:

I’m not really sure what we will be doing.

It doesn’t get any more wishy washy than that from a Defence Minister. Not that I blame Mapp for the sentiment. A decade in the opposition wilderness, the boss is away and he probably hasn’t even been briefed by officials from his ministry. That legitimately excuses the sentiment, but not the comment.

Never, ever should a Defence Minister express the least bit of doubt about what should or is about to happen. Indecision in this role can be fatal. Literally. Particularly when he/she has made such unequivocal statements in the past, such as:

It’s all very well as a nation we are strong in our condemnation of whaling, but we must put our money where our mouth is.

He could have stalled for time, stating that he was getting briefed and would soon speak to his counterparts overseas. He could have come out directly with a forceful statement that he had reconsidered his opinion after being briefed in his new role. He could have said just about anything at all except “I’m not really sure what we will be doing”.

Is this the guy we want responsible for putting our armed forces in harm’s way? I think not.
