Tatua Dairy also hit by melamine
The melamine scandal has wiggled its way out of China and into New Zealand with news that product from Tatua Cooperative Dairy Company has also been contaminated. Although I had to ask has an issue shot right past mainstream into the realm of the bizarre when Whale Oil says:
The more important story however, which has very severe implications for the economy as a whole is the melamine scandal which has now spread to Tatua Dairy. It seems that farmers have either by been using insecticides containing cyromazine, an insecticide which breaks down to melamine in mammals and plants, or feeding dairy cows cheap imported feeds such as palm kernel contaminated with cyromazine or its metabolite, melamine…
Someone has allowed the importation of cheap feeds to essentially destroy this nation’s livelihood.
and No Minister reckons:
It looks as though the prosperity of our whole dairy industry and therefore our nation’s economy might well be brought crashing down by a failure to recognise the dangers inherent in importing materials from sub standard economies.
Those are two of the most right wing blogs in New Zealand seemingly railing against free trade and open borders that have allowed contaminants into our food chain. Food security is an issue the Greens have been campaigning on for a long time now. The solution is, as Whale Oil and No Minister seem to be hinting, more localised control of our farming sector and less reliance on imported food, or contributions to our food supply, such as cheap palm kernel and feed stock.

Looks like a small competitor has been a bit slack in trying to out-compete Fonterra…
You wish, but I doubt it. They’d probably prefer better overseas quality control? What does “more localised control of our farming sector” even mean?!

“They’d probably prefer better overseas quality control?”
…Also, better border testing regimes.

I don’t know why you alway think that because I am rightwing I don’t care about things like food security. I do, i also care about trade and these to things crossover.
Perhaps it is because these two things aren’t the ONLY things I care about.
Anyway what fool, i ask you, would want to have open slather feed sources that allow such contaminants in? I don’t know any rightie that would, does that make us all bizarre?
I perhaps am more Green than you would imagine, having been brought up experienced with our bush and delicious animals, i love nature. I’m just not an adherent to the “we are all going to drown” chicken little-ism that seems to have infected green ideas.
Clean waterways, tick
Removal of pest species, tick

Self-sufficiency for Pacific communities, tick ( I actually help them achieve this)
See more Green than you would have believed.

many other countries are pulling out products they think has a melamine, especially those from china. they said not only products from china are contaminated with melamine as well as the other products from other countries. i think the government from different country must check first those food they will import before distributing it to their country.
