An unusual request

I just received this email this morning:

Dear Sir/Madam,

This is mathew gary and I will like to order coal. Do get back to me with the types and cost for the ones you do carry and let me know if there is an extra cost when using visa or master card. Kindly get back to me with your name and your direct phone number. Are you the sales manager or the owner?

Mathew Gary

As you’ll probably have guessed I don’t stock much coal here in Bowen House. But I was wondering if maybe someone at Solid Energy might like to take up this business opportunity and get back to Mr Gary? Maybe they could get Thompson and Clark Investigations to help organise the rendevous?

  1. The big SOE’s are already doing it. They’re investing the same money that would have gone into thermal generation, into renewables. Not that cost is the only consideration.

  2. dbuckley, the Greens don’t consider either coal or further large-scale hydro is necessary to ensure future electricity supply. If one were, we would support hydro over coal, and do support small-scale hydro.

But all the evidence is that with all the geothermal, wind and potentially tidal generation at various stages of planning and development coming on-stream, together with an effective energy conservation strategy, neither additional coal or large-scale hydro will be necessary.

  3. Given that Green policy appears to be to block hydro development, which effectiviely means being pro-coal, I dont see this request as being that odd, and perhaps you ought to give it serious thought.
