At the very bottom of the Herald’s story on the CTU leaflet which might affect Labour’s election expense declaration is a small piece that says there have so far only been eight declared donations of more than $20,000 to the Electoral Commission. Five of them have been to the Green Party (totalling $162,000) two to National ($60,000) including one from a trust, and one to Act ($100,000). I know that the Greens’ campaign budget is tight and we are not going to be able to do all the flash advertising that the larger parties are doing, so I’m a bit confused as to where all those parties’ money is coming from without large donations. Has National really only got two large donors, and Labour none at all?

Big money backers? Labour? Surely you’re mistaken for even suggesting such a thing

It does not matter Frog, if the Nat’s are breaking the law they will simply change it after the election to make their illegal donations legal.

Stop Press, electric car trial for next year. NZ is in line for a trial of Mitsubishi’s new electric car. Not much detail in the very short piece on the Herald website – but good(ish) news for now. Well done to meridian and whichever Govt Dept has been negotiating this.

Oh, and apologies for the blatant hijack. Interesting post Frog, so where are Labour and the Nats getting their money from? When did the reporting period start – could they have called up all their donors and got the money in their bank account before the legislation came into effect. Is the reporting period restricted to the election Year?

One of the National ones is interesting. It is from the Road Transport Trust, which I presume is a front for the Road Transport Forum or some of its members.
More roads – Lots of them!

Rumours were late last year that the Nats got all their big donations in before 1 Jan just for this reason. Maybe Labour did the same.

Presumably a donation before 1 Jan 2008 should still show up as a donation in the last 12 months unless it was also before 17 Sept 2007?
Section 54 of the act is not listed in the exclusion clause of section 149 of the act so should apply for the full 12 months rather than from the day of assent (19 Dec 07)? Is that right?

How about : the construction industry: keep the flood gates open. Let’s get another million people over the next 10 to 20s years (that’s a dead cert).

Yeah, I already mentioned that one earlier today, but it was ignored

Don’t worry, it wasn’t ignored. I did read it but just have not written about it (yet).

Electric cars:
How many million gallons of petrol and diesel do we consume each year? Some of that will have to be replaced by electricity.

‘Many people believe that lack of efficient enough storage is one of the hurdles to be cleared before renewable energy can truly reach its potential. Towards that end, scientists from the University of Texas as Austin have announced that they have made a nanotech breakthrough using Graphene, a one atom thick carbon material, which they say could lead to new energy storage solutions.
Could Double Storage Capacity of Ultracapacitors
Rod Ruoff, a mechanical engineering professor at UT Austin and his team are testing graphene-based ultracapacitor cells, using chemically modified graphene and different common electrolytes. While currently the electric charge stored per weight of graphene is similar to existing ultracapacitors, computer modeling suggests it may be possible to double this capacity.”

Have any of you actually seen how ridiculously small this car is going too be?
The platform is based on the minuscule i car, it can barley fit a family of four let alone four adults.
It ain’t going to be a big seller.

How many million gallons of petrol and diesel do we consume each year? We haven’t consumed any gallons of anything for nigh on a score and ten years. But we did consume 4.54 billion litres of petrol and diesel last year. Which, I believe (but correct me if I’m wrong) converts to approximately some other number of imperial gallons, but you will have to increase that last number by a fraction if you want to compare NZ with the USA.

bb, You are spot on. You’d think the Japs would have learnt from the abject failure of the Mini and the Bambina

Kevyn, you may be able to cope fine in a car that size, but it’s realistically not big enough for Big Bro’s ego. Ask yourself, honestly, would you want to be stuck in a car that size with Big Bro’s ego?

Ah, but the Mini and the Bambina can go around corners.

On another thread, BB’s told us today that he no longer owns a Hummer. But won’t tell us what he does drive these days, except that it is apparently even more carbon emitting!
Mind you, this thread started off being about Big Donors, not Big Dongers, so I suppose he needs something to compensate.

bb, note that many families have two cars (or more) and that one is ofetn a small town/city run-about. The i-car would be pretty useful in that role.
Now, if the government would offer reduced rego charges on low emission vehicles it would be even more attractive.

have you been to ask bob jones yet..?
he did say on the telly he would be willing to donate to the greens..
..but that nobody had ever asked him..
so..um..!
(..could someone alert whoever in the greens needs to be made aware of this..?
..and who will ‘get onto it’..?)
(you’re welcome..!..)
(this is my second alert on this..
..i fear nothing may have happened last time..
..cos’ of..y’know..!..the ‘messanger’..?)
that would be silly/sad..eh..?
..not to ask jones ..
‘cos’ that phil suggested it..?

Now now Toad, there’s enough prejudice against men with small willies already, without you suggesting they drive Hummers

Dear Phil,
do you really think you’re the only person who thought of that?
Of course they will have asked him!
