I forget which politician said it, was it Lange?, that the future of New Zealand was as a primary producer and a theme park. Well, it looks like he was a prophet after all. The technology has been perfected and now we can turn Godzone into one big carnival ride, thanks to our ever expanding dairy industry. We can use all that effluent to power carnival rides!
Hat tip to EcoGeek, who has raised our awareness of the one technology that can save our economy! The California State Fair has built the Barnyard Animal Train, a ride that runs on biogas from California’s dairy industry. I cannot wait until we see these things rolling out across the Waikato and Canterbury!

Don’t neglect Southland! There is more than enough poo coming ‘on stream’ to power the region. 100 ‘conversions’ expected over the coming 12 months. Already, the whitebait and the family farms are suffering according to g.blog

Surely if they can power a carnival train they should be able to power a real train too? Then all we’d need is some tracks, signals, platforms…

Poo poo, of we go! All aboard the Fonterra Express! Yours is a good idea kaimatacroft. If the Christchurch City Council can power their vehicles from biogas from humanure, why can’t the rural areas power up their trains with cow-power. There is no lack of raw material!

What an interesting idea.
Was it someone from NZ that invented a small scale methane plant for third world countries?

People in the ‘third world’ have been using them for generations. When it comes to clever, appropriate technologies, we in the ‘west’ are way behind the play. Biologically reducable, non-toxic, locally produced materials (clay, straw, sand, manure) are the cutting edge technologies we are only now beginning to explore. Here’s the key concept – don’t poo in water. Soil and manure go together like Marge and Homer.

I can’t understand why this bio gas digestor technology hasn’t taken off in NZ especially now with the price of energy getting more expensive.
It might even help to slow global warming if all the methane gas from the cow dung was used to make electricity.
I think all factory farms whether cows, chickens or pigs should be required to have a bio gas digestor to get rid of the poo.
There are villages in China that use this technology for electricity, no wonder China is going to be the next super power.
Some buses in Beijing are powered by micro generators (I think that is what they called them) and these micro generators can be powered by a bio gas digestor.

that is refreshing (well, not the thought of poo…) to hear that NZ is using cow poo for energy. i wish americans would do the same and not be grossed out but it! what a great idea.
