But sometime quite bad for your health – another cyclist dead over the weekend – in Karori. But not a senior cop, so only a sidebar para in the DomPost.

Yes tragedy. but I’m betting the death didn’t come from a head on collision with another cyclist. I suspect another form of transport was involved. I see from the LTSA’s website that 6 cyclists have been killed so far this year, 23 pedestrians, 24 motor cyclists, 101 car drivers and 71 passengers. (Yep, I know those stats are influenced by the proportion of cars to bikes and pedestrians). But it would be interesting to know how many of those bike and pedestrian deaths did not involve a car.

frog, The current definition of road deaths includes only crashes involving a motor vehicle, ie at least one motor vehicle must be involved. …

frog, Sorry that can’t answer your actual question. Although I can say that a very high proportion of the pedestrians seriously injured at traffic lights in Christchurch involve traucks and buses, mostly ones that are turning. I suspect this is because drivers of long vehicles have to watch their clearance at the back wheels and don’t see pedestrians. Incidently, bacause pedestrians don’t owe a duty of care to other road users they are never can be found legally at fault. Even if one steps off the curb into the a cycle lane right in front of you. If you were knocked into the path of a car the car driver would be legally at fault for travelling to fast to stop. Perhaps people would drive a bit more sensibly if they knew that :0
