Bainimarama’s flying visit

Foreign Affairs Ministry officials confirmed today the ban would be relaxed to enable Bainimarama and officials to transit through Auckland airport on their way to Niue, where the forum is being held.

They defended the decision to relax the rules on the grounds that the forum wanted an update from Fiji on its previous pledge to hold an election by March 2009.

Couldn’t we just ask Frank to write a letter to the Niue Forum?

Or better, to find his own way there.

He’ll apparently be sharing a plane with Helen Clark and Kevin Rudd. I’d love to be a fly on the wall for that nasty flight…

I’d actually like to see one of Fiji’s naval vessels take him to Niue.

After all, he is still the Commander of Fiji’s Military forces. I don’t think they have airforce to get him to Niue faster. So, Frank, go there by your own gunboats - lesser carbon emissions make it more environmentally sound in any case.

Puzzled by this though - “In November that year, he was promoted to Rear Admiral, but this promotion was reverted to Commodore on 1 February 2003.”

Anyone know why he was demoted from Rear Admiral to Commodore? Wikipedia doesn’t shed any light on the reason.

Oh, I suppose the other option is that he could swim.
