Competition - draw a fish & win a book

Mark Kurlansky, the author of several bestselling non-fiction titles including Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World and Salt: A World History, has just written a new book called The Last Fish Tale - the fate of the Atlantic and our disappearing fisheries.  And we’ve got two copies to give away to frogblog readers.

Random House, the publishers, introduce the book this way:

Will most of the major fisheries of the world be exhausted by 2048, as has been claimed? Have the number of large fish in the ocean decreased by 90 per cent over the past 50 years, as has been asserted by a respected scientist? Are 60 per cent of the fish species studied by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation either fully exploited or depleted, as one of their reports attests? Fishing at sea, an ancient trade and a way of life that has defined coastal towns throughout history, may be coming to an end. The culture and traditions of coastal Britain and of seagoing nations everywhere are now threatened with extinction.

To win a copy all you need to do is leave a comment below with a link to either a drawing of something fishy you’ve drawn here on this Queeky drawing site or a link to an online photo you have taken of something fishy.  We’ll get Metiria, the Greens’ fishiest MP, to judge the results.  One prize to the most artistic fishy picture and one spot prize for entering.

We’ll keep the competition open for a three weeks, until Aug 14.

This is an extract from a conversation I overheard a few years ago.

Act supporter: “Politics is all just fashion.”

Alliance supporter: “Well, research has shown that, if North Sea cod continues to be fished at current rates, the species will be extinct in 10 years. Or is that just a fashion?”

I’d love to enter but I a Linux geek and the free flash plugin wont render the page. :(

  4. frog Says:

Tuatara - just send us a link to any fish related picture you photographed or drew. That’ll count. (BTW - The flash plugin is working for me on Ubuntu.)

Lyndon - nice simplicity. But what about one of those cool photoshopped numbers over at Scoop as well?

  5. Tuatara Says:

Frog - Which plugin are you using?

  6. frog Says:

Ah, I’m not too sure - not that much of a computer expert - but i think it’s Shockwave flash 9.0 r124

Well, fish live in the sea, still a few of them, anyway, so here’s my tidepool picture from the Catlins, where you can watch the dolphins in Curio Bay.

I am more of a exclusively linux geek. YMMV and probably will, but the latest ubuntu with firefox with flash 9.0 r48 did work OK for showing the page once I told noscript to let it work. Haven’t had any thought of drawing anything.

Here’s my entry (complete with irrelevant caption). To ensure that it’s artistic merit is fully appreciated I have entituled (ask your great-grandmother) it:
“Too many raindrops saved the little fishies.”

Hi stopwhaling - you could either post a photo on a free photo hosting site like picasaweb or flickr or something similar or you could email the photo to me here at frogblog [at] greens.org.nz and I’ll put it up for people to look at.

  15. stopwhaling Says:

cheers for that -email will do nicely-all that other nerd stuff i can’t deal with -got too many regional councillors to annoy over over-allocated water consents and the die-sese of dairy conversions stuffing up our waterways - its like a cancer spreading across the whenua
