Packing the plane

The front page of the Dominion Post this morning is one of those ‘only in Wellington’ moments.  It seems the New Zealand Olympic team is taking a barista with them to Beijing.

Barista Julianne Frith is off to Beijing so Kiwi athletes can pause for a coffee while chasing gold medal glory.

I imagine the conversation at the New Zealand Olympic Planning Cmmittee went something like this:

Athletes?

Check

Coaches?

Check

Physiotherapists?

Check

Masseuses?

Check

Psychologists?

Check

Right then, that’s a full plane load. We’re good to go.

Wait, do they have coffee in China?

Can’t say I know.

Well we better take a Barista then!

There’s no space left. OK, let’s ditch an athlete.

What about this one?

It’s good to see Ms Frith decked out in her Kiwi made Kapinua clothing. I imagine the luggage she will be taking with her will be rivalling the rowers, which will also help fill the plane.  I wonder if she’ll be taking organic fair trade coffee?

    OK
    And your point is ? ? ? ? ?

She’s an awar winning barrista, and if you’ve ever been to China you’ll know that you HAVE to take your coffee with you - even instant - if that’s your drink of choice!

No hidden political point - just thought it was funny.

When I toured Yunnan for a couple of weeks last year, we found one “coffee” shop, and the “coffee” was expensive and revolting. The Chinese love tea, and are seldom without a little glass jarful by their side. They expect you to do the same, including straining the tea leaves with your teeth.

I wonder if the barista’s taking her own machine?

BOSH - Bet you a cent to a dollar she is!

FROG - WOW! A sense of humour! Good on yer mate!

At least the Barista will make their hair stand on end and probably makes half decent coffee too.

Why shouldn’t athletes have what every other kiwi worker has.
