I’ve just received an email from Colin James critiquing my interpretation of his article. So, apologies to Colin: I misinterpreted the comments he made about John Key and probably placed undue emphasis on the implication in his story that the Greens are no longer young and fresh.
I actually thought his comments about the upcoming Emissions Trading Scheme debate and also the Green Party Annual Meeting were a perceptive analysis of the debate that Greens are likely to be having this weekend about working with other parties. Although personally I’d reject the suggestion that there is a strong left contingent in the Greens that will block a consensus on working with National. When the decisions about who the Greens can work with after the election are made, the decisions makers, being pragmatic egg-heady Greens, will probably make their decision about who they can work with and on what issues they can work, based, at least in part, on other parties’ current policies, rather than ruling out specific parties because of past stances on issues like the Springbok Tour. Which, I guess, places the impetus on National to have policy of some sort?
Meanwhile, seeing as I alluded briefly to the Emissions Trading Scheme, for the next few days you can listen or download Kathryn Ryan’s interview with Jeanette Fitzsimons this morning. Jeanette makes it pretty clear what Labour needs to do to get this crucial piece of legislation passed.

I think you mean ‘onus’ rather than ‘impetus’.

i would say things like sections of national being pro nuclear and climate change deniers would be an imperdiment to a partnership.
and things like ‘browncoal’ brownlee being pro coal and john key being pro doing ‘lignite diesel’ – craving up the southland countryside to do it and adding heaps on the kyoto tab (bill).
if national wants to make policy that would attract the greens, lets see it…
