Campbell Live gave a big plug tonight to this new blog/portal The Wire and its daddy, Slam X Hype. The first sign of middle age is when you notice that not a single blogger on the new site is older than you are, and you’re not that old. (really) A few random reads of posts and it doesn’t make a big impression, but that is an unfair first impression, especially for a blog. It takes time for anyone to find their voice in this medium, and hell, it only launched today!
So I will be keeping a keen amphibian eye on the site to see who rises to the top as cream, who gets by and who gets replaced. I suppose I am just jealous that I wasn’t considered hip enough to get the call. Perhaps it’s my use of words like hip and that age thing again?
Maybe they want someone to keep tabs on all the political blogs and make some unbiased comment? (cue the Tui advert)
I wish them the best of luck and look forward to hearing some fresh new voices out here…

How is the ‘broken windows’ policing approach contrary to the principle of non-violence?

The Greens are opposed to Big Brother and this policy involves more surviellence.
The Greens are on an outlier position when it comes to civil liberties and along with civil libertarians will be breathing down the neck of any actions by the state. What’s more there is a tendency to “blame the system” for errant behaviour, especially for people who “don’t see the good side of life”… Sue Bradford.
The Green Charter Principles are given broad scope of interpretation.
ps I’m a pragmatist, believing in the carrot and the stick and an evolutionary basis of behaviour.

Steve Levitt (Freakonomics) has researched why crime in NYC fell in the 1990s, and IIRC he concluded it had little or nothing to do with the Broken Windows policy and everything to do with Rowe vs. Wade in 1973 – about 18 years before crime in NYC and across America began its steep decline.
…………….
So Sue’s ferals have a bit to do with it perhaps…..?
