ok look the only way anything is going to happen is if people start taking action you cannot rely on a government to do anything all polititians do is talk and maybe pass a bill but every year people get away pirate whaleing in the antarctic whale sancuary poaching and shark finning in international marine reserves like cocos island and the galapagos islands.

If we want to stop these set nets from killing dolphins the well we kinda have to get our hands a lil dirty and cut them ourselves and release all marine life in them remember there could be little blue penguins trapped and dieing in these things too.

Another way of stopping illegal activity is enforcement that works. Once a few illegal set netters have had their boats and all their gear confiscated (which the Ministry of Fisheries can do for illegal paua fishers for example), the rest will learn. It is simple aversion therapy and it works.

It’s all very well pointing out the problem, but if you want to stop poeple from doing things a certain way, you have to give them a viable alternative or they will just do it illegally.

yeah, she got it from a press release – but this staff needs a mainstream campaign – you know, Women’s mags, Listener (oh that’s right, they just sacked their ecologic columnist!), tele, you name it.

I’m not having a go, and i acknowledged the great job Metiria does, i just think the people need to know – when i mention the state of dolphins, sea lions or otherwise in NZ, those who aren’t ‘in the know’ are always shocked, and then immediately want to know more – they usually say “But, why don’t we know about this stuff?”. I know how hard it is to get the issues out there – i was merely pointing out the need to ramp it up a little more.

So, don’t take it personally frog, just see it as another plea to take the message even further!

what does being ‘in’ mean? supporting a call to ban set nets? just like how thousands of people asked the Fisheries Minister to stop the sea lion bycatch in the squid fishery and he ignored it?

NZ’s fishing lobby is very powerful, with no regard for the facts (see Seafic’s latest press release, where amongst other inaccuracies, Owen Symmans states that “Hector’s dolphins aren’t even endangered” – duh, yes they are, both nationally and internationally). What’s scary about that statement is that Owen’s been party to the drafting and consultation of the threat management plan, and right up the front of the draft threat management plan is an explanation of the endangered status of hector’s and maui dolphins.

The Maui dolphin will most certainly be the next extinction of a marine mammal – coming right after the Chinese lost the Yangtse river dolphin.

Clean green NZ. What a croc.

I wish the Greens knew how to lobby better and in the mainstream environment more. Don’t get me wrong, Metiria does a great job in Parliament – but who’s reaching the people – aside from Bridget Saunders…
