Then it’s probably time you read the Herald’s story Climate change could see pubs run dry – Niwa. First up a pessimistic quote from one of those pesky, killjoy scientists, who probably drinks wine anyway:
National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) climate scientist Dr Jim Salinger said climate change could see a decline of malting barley production in parts of Canterbury and across the Tasman.
“It will mean either there will be pubs without beer or the cost of beer will go up,” Dr Salinger said.
But then it has the makers of Lion Red and Speights agreeing with him:
Lion Nathan corporate affairs director Liz Read said climate change was forcing the price of malted barley, sugar, aluminium and sugar up and the cost would be passed on to the consumer.

Biofuels again, eh….

That was a very selective quote BluePeter. You even left out the other half of the sentence which mentions climate change as the cause, not biofuels. That said I agree with you and have been covering the issue for a while. Biofuels are only a solution if they do not reduce our capacity to grow food, and do not harm our environment or communities. If they meet those tests they are worth investing in.

I’ve learned from masters.
But I agree, things are getting pretty darn serious if my Stella supply is interrupted…
Can barley production be moved somewhere else?

…malted barley, sugar, aluminium and sugar…
How much aluminium is in their beer?

Perhaps southland’s climate would suit…in several years. New angle on climate change tho, wa-hey!

Well, you’ll need to clear all the cows of Southland first to make way for hops. That could be, as the saying goes, thirsty work.

Frog, Nah, just feed the cows on hops then brew the milk into stout.

dm, no aluminium in the beer, just beer in the alumium. How come the price of glass is immune to climate change?

Does anyone know anything about climate change and (eg) the Tasman current?
