The New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development’s latest ShapeNZ Survey on emissions trading and climate change shows that 82% think climate change is an urgent problem or a problem for now, rather than a problem to deal with later or not a problem at all. 56% think that New Zealand’s response should be to become a global leader on the issue rather than copy or lag behind other countries.
But when asked what the they think the government is actually doing 35% of New Zealanders think the government is doing below average on climate change. Only 18% think it is doing better than average.
When asked to choose between the two old parties on who is best to manage climate change 35% didn’t know or couldn’t choose. And that’s probably because they were not given enough choices, because when asked about the best coalition government to manage climate change 56% specified that they wanted the Greens in coalition government with either National or Labour. By comparison only 30% specified a National coalition of some sort and 37% specified some sort of Labour coalition.

on the trolls and those who are unable to keep on topic
Just remember that (from Kiwiblog) “It’s a poll of those who take part within an online panel so not as robust as a truly random poll”, so the results may be a bit biased towards those involved with the NZBCSD.

In my experience, it’s also an issue many people like to sound concerned about, but what they do is something else entirely. They’re usually the first to complain when the cost of fuel rises.

Kind of like, ‘who could possibly be AGAINST clean air/water/polar bears/puppies?!’

And it sounds extra comical when there’s a SUV parked in the garage, the central heating is on full blast, and all the furniture is imported from Europe. This particular family aren’t a figment of my imagination….

I can tell you that the cost of air conditioning is horrendous, the fuel bill for the SUV’s is going through the roof and now they want me to pay more tax.
Climate change might be something the uninformed have been conned into worrying about but when they are faced with increasing costs you can be sure that they will vote with their wallets.
As soon as they realise that there is nothing WE can do that will make a difference they will start to ask why we insist on penalising ourselves when the major polluters continue as normal, hell they may even do a bit of research and come to the logical conclusion that the whole thing is a con driven by the hard left.

>>they will vote with their wallets
That’s what I’m thinking.
We’re at this point where the general public have been given all the green rhetoric, but not the consequences or real costs of nonsense like carbon trading. The price ticking over on the pump will be the true test of their conviction…

Where’d MY comment go? Could be embarassing myself by repeating it, but basically I was having a chuckle at BB’s “hard left” assertion…
Whether one accepts AGW or not BluePeter, you might not be far off there. I suspect the supply/demand issues of oil will become more prominent at the same time though…

So, given BB’s ranting about the cost of his household, let’s talk about things he can do to be more efficient, regardless of climate change. How about solar-powered lights? It’s more likely than you might think.

Ari
There is no chance of me EVER using solar lights or those ugly energy saving things.
Mrs Bruv came home with one of those things once, I tossed it straight into the bin.
