A cynic might say that to be reported, an event needs: 1) To have a record number of people die 2) Not be more than a few weeks in duration (it becomes old, boring news after that) 3) Be easy to take sides (ie good vs. evil) Actually, I suspect it has something more with what the media think people want to hear.
