In this case I mean safe from abuse. Feelings of safety are a matter of perception, and i would compare the influence of civil libertarians to times when people could let dangerous dogs roam.

Responding to your first post. Public transport is safe. I’ve used it for years, and never had any problems. Whenever a crime occurs on public transport, some people get into a panic about how unsafe it is. Driving the car is also unsafe … you could have an accident.

Its not really complicated … its just plain old racism. Its evident across a wide range of society, including those who are employed. A number of times when I have been simply walking down the street with a friend, the police have driven by extra slowly, because they can’t believe that a polynesian person associating with a palangi can be up to any good. I don’t notice this happening nearly as often to palangi people. Sure, its not nearly as bad as the racism you are talking about, but its still racism (the police should be looking for criminal activities, not who they have racially profiled as being more likely to be a criminal).

Any time christian fundamentalism raises it’s head, both eugenics and xenophobia get an outing.
So here in NZ, that means Turia can advocate a “let them breed” philosophy, in order that the persecuted of the Maaori world can feel better about their lot.
And in return, the skinheads and white power christians can advocate racial purity, “silver ring” chastity vows, and a whole raft of policies to ensure that only rich, white, well-educated young people can feel secure to buy a house and start a family. Give me atheism any time.

I’ve got an Asian girl staying with me and she asked me “what do young people mean when I go to the bus exchange (and) they call out f***ing Asian sl*t?” …
I believe the civil libertarian influence in law and government makes this sort of behaviour prosper, and, according to the political compass the Green Party is in an outlier position left/libertarian.
