Today is Set Net Ban Day of Action – there are some actions underway as we speak. Protestors were grouping at Oriental Bay first thing this morning, heading towards Parliament at 1pm, and plan to get as many signatures as possible en route. From there they’ll head to the Ministry of Fisheries building and then to Vic Uni.

A recent Ian Wishart speech, titled ‘Darkness at the Edge of Town: the looming threats to our culture, beliefs and civilisations’, is described by Challenge Weekly as “a relatively mild delivery from one who has become known in some circles as a ‘stirrer’.”
[snips]
Mr Wishart spoke at the VisionNetwork AGM and fifth birthday celebration last week.
“I’m reminded constantly of the saying: Better to be a fool for God than wise among men,? said Mr Wishart.“Investigate doesn’t set out to offend anyone, but we tell the stories that God wants us to tell,? he said. “It has always been God’s timing – for instance when we did our story on the Government stance on Iraq, just as it became known [but unbeknown to us] that Air New Zealand had been flying Australian troops to Iraq.?
Mr Wishart took a swipe at Planned Parenthood and its New Zealand affiliate Family Planning, which he said had a social agenda to change the ratios of racial mix through family planning. “This went badly wrong as the white population reduced dramatically,? he said. “Our culture is at the cross roads. Some societies are breeding themselves out of existence. Our role in the Church is to wake up and see the signs of the times.?
A second bad influence has been the doctrines of Carl Marx [sic], he said. These had filtered through into our education system in policies which crush faith and belief and the moral cohesion that they bring. “The Communists [whose doctrines were based on Marx’ works] have never won a war,? he said. “They have won territories by using ideas. We need to stop being frogs in increasingly hot water and stand up and say ‘This is wrong’.
“This is the time to be a confident evangelist,? he said. “We need to know the answers. There isn’t a question that hasn’t been asked. With climate change, increasing demand for oil, land and water, our Earth is becoming unstable. Only Christ can sort this out.?
Not sure about others, but Frog reckons the suggestion that Family Planning is working on the genocide of the ‘white population’ and that only higher powers can fix climate change and global instability shouldn’t qualify as ‘mild’!

Is peak oil a guy thing?
Whenever I am at gatherings involving peak oil, I am always struck by the imbalance between men and women…
[from the Comments section]
Women are absent in peak oil groups because the idea that some day, stuff will run out and we’ll have to make do is news only to men.In our various cultures where women run the household, the idea of finite resources is in the “Duh” category.

Now that the taser trial has ended, perhaps the police could push for arming themselves ahead of election season? This is how they deal with queries to politicos in Florida.
(Warning: some may (should?) find this footage disturbing. It’s actually easier to take than this footage of a similar incident late last year, which goes to show the importance of carrying student ID to the library at all times.)
Mister Colbert’s take on it here. Naomi Wolf’s here. Apparently, it has become an internet zeitgeist moment, and it shouldn’t be long before www.dontazemebro.co.nz is snapped up.
The taser seems to be an integral part of dealing with autistic young people and the disabled in the good ol’ USA.

His problem is that he believes that God makes everyone.
Tariana Turia seems hell-bent on encouraging Maori to breed fast. She praises young Maori who get pregnant and criticised people for condemning teen pregnancy.
Presumably the frogs feel the same way about Islamic radicals.
What proportion of the Green party is for the taser (and what against). Did any thought go into it was was it deemed to be against the chater?

I’ve got an Asian girl staying with me and she asked me “what do young people mean when I go to the bus exchange (and) they call out f***ing Asian sl*t?” …
I believe the civil libertarian influence in law and government makes this sort of behaviour prosper, and, according to the political compass the Green Party is in an outlier position left/libertarian.
What’s your plan to make public transport safe?

Any time christian fundamentalism raises it’s head, both eugenics and xenophobia get an outing.
So here in NZ, that means Turia can advocate a “let them breed” philosophy, in order that the persecuted of the Maaori world can feel better about their lot.
And in return, the skinheads and white power christians can advocate racial purity, “silver ring” chastity vows, and a whole raft of policies to ensure that only rich, white, well-educated young people can feel secure to buy a house and start a family. Give me atheism any time.
Racist slurs at bus-stops?
Well, the practice of importing filipina mail-order brides, and the huge traffic in asian internet porn was bound to have an effect on real-world asian immigrants at some time.
Not to mention the 3rd or 4th generation chinese NZ’ers who also get slandered whilst innocently carrying out their business.
This isn’t a civil libertarian issue, jh, it’s about basic human decency, which in our individualistic, user-pays-or-starves society is getting a little thin on the ground. Be careful what you wish for, you may not like it when you get it.

Thanks DrFreud,
another one is “don’t have a part of the good side of life” (or close quote from Sue bradford discussing the Kahuis).
“This isn’t a civil libertarian issue, jh, it’s about basic human decency, which in our individualistic, user-pays-or-starves society is getting a little thin on the ground.”
The victim thinks these people “aren’t working”. She also says she and a Korean friend get most abuse, some of her other friends (at language school) don’t get as much “but they are bigger”.
“Be careful what you wish for, you may not like it when you get it.”
Surveys show that Christchurch residents don’t feel safe.
An interesting incite into how the green party thinks: the perpetrators of crime are good people who are corrupted by an unjust society. Change society .Smash the System, Fight …(a Sue Bradford slogan), and crime will disappear.
Green ship, red crew.

JH,
Its not really complicated … its just plain old racism. Its evident across a wide range of society, including those who are employed. A number of times when I have been simply walking down the street with a friend, the police have driven by extra slowly, because they can’t believe that a polynesian person associating with a palangi can be up to any good. I don’t notice this happening nearly as often to palangi people. Sure, its not nearly as bad as the racism you are talking about, but its still racism (the police should be looking for criminal activities, not who they have racially profiled as being more likely to be a criminal).

JH,
Responding to your first post. Public transport is safe. I’ve used it for years, and never had any problems. Whenever a crime occurs on public transport, some people get into a panic about how unsafe it is. Driving the car is also unsafe … you could have an accident.

In this case I mean safe from abuse. Feelings of safety are a matter of perception, and i would compare the influence of civil libertarians to times when people could let dangerous dogs roam.
